Abstract

The global construction industry is responsible for approximately 39% of energy-related CO₂ emissions, driving interest in green building practices in developing countries. This study aimed to identify and analyze the factors influencing the adoption of green construction techniques in urban infrastructure projects in Bolívar canton, Manabí province, Ecuador. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, descriptive-correlational approach was employed. A structured questionnaire based on an adapted Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was applied, comprising 15 items across five dimensions: economic barriers, technical barriers, institutional barriers, organizational facilitators, and adoption intention, administered to a sample of 105 construction professionals in the canton. Results showed that institutional barriers had the highest mean (M = 4.32; SD = 0.46), followed by adoption intention (M = 4.35; SD = 0.44). Spearman correlation analyses revealed strong associations between economic and technical barriers (ρ = 0.729; p < 0.001), and between economic and institutional barriers (ρ = 0.531; p < 0.001). Organizational facilitators showed a positive and significant correlation with adoption intention (ρ = 0.537; p < 0.001), while correlations between barriers and facilitators were negative, suggesting that both systems operate in tension. It is concluded that the primary constraint for the transition toward sustainable construction practices in Bolívar canton is of an institutional-regulatory nature, and that organizational commitment constitutes the main driver of adoption intention.
