Abstract

In Ecuador, there are no safety standards to verify the structural resistance of automotive components under impact loads. This explains the lack of experimental equipment for research in this area. This is concerning, as safety requirements worldwide are becoming increasingly stringent, especially for key elements of passive vehicle safety. This work develops a design methodology to establish the requirements for the testing equipment, define the necessary functions, and select the optimal solution among various alternatives. Additionally, engineering principles are used to verify the resistance and rigidity of the pendulum, ensuring a safe design. The necessary steps for its construction and assembly were outlined. Finally, four tests were conducted on a bus bumper specimen, confirming that the test can be reliably performed and that the results can be used to evaluate the behavior of components and materials typical of local automotive industry.
