Abstract
Thermal comfort conditions in rural school classrooms are a determining factor for the well-being and academic performance of the educational community. In the province of Manabí, Ecuador, the hot-humid climate combined with the predominance of conventional construction systems generates interior environments with thermal overload. This study determined the relationship between the thermal comfort perception of students, teachers, and administrative staff of rural educational institutions in Manabí and the characteristics of the construction systems employed in these buildings. A quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and descriptive-correlational design was adopted. Using Instrument 1, 106 valid participants from the educational community were surveyed, and using Instrument 2, a technical observation was conducted of 43 constructive blocks distributed across multiple rural institutions. Results showed that the four evaluated dimensions (interior temperature conditions, natural ventilation performance, thermal habitability, and the role of construction materials) fall at a moderate perception level (means: 3.22, 3.29, 3.08, and 2.80, respectively, on a 1–5 scale). The Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed non-normal distributions across all dimensions (p < 0.05), leading to the use of Spearman's correlation. Positive and significant correlations were found between temperature and ventilation (rho = 0.332, p < 0.001) and between ventilation and habitability (rho = 0.221, p < 0.05). The technical assessment of the constructive blocks revealed that 31.6% of the roof systems were rated adequate, compared to 68.4% rated regular or deficient. Metal sheet roofing dominated the built inventory (85.1% of blocks), and 79.4% of participants identified the roof as the element most influencing interior heat. Findings confirm the relevance of envelope interventions to improve thermal habitability conditions in rural education in Manabí.
