Abstract

The crucial role of the CAN network, an invention by Robert Bosch in the 80s, is highlighted. Thanks to CAN, vehicles have evolved from being predominantly mechanical systems to advanced configurations of electronics and sensors, this has boosted the performance and efficiency in powertrains and engines, especially visible in high-end vehicles, where the precise interaction of the vehicle components, orchestrated by the CAN network, results in an optimization of fuel consumption and improvement of internal processes. The limitations of CAN and its evolution over the years are addressed. From its original version to the most recent one, known as CAN FD, being able to handle a larger amount of data and information, becoming the ideal solution for modern vehicles. In contrast to a reduction in sensors, vehicles are including more and more, thus increasing the need and dependence on the CAN network. Despite the time elapsed since its creation, the CAN network is more relevant than ever in the automotive industry. Its understanding is key to grasp the essence of the evolution and future of vehicles.
